Bunbury - Western Australia

Welcome To The Dolphin Discovery Centre

Bury yourself amongst the fascinating displays and information about the Koombana Bay dolphins. Find out what they eat, where they go, what they do, and just how big they are! You’ll also discover other marine life which lives in the south west region. The Interaction Zone allows dolphins to visit us on their own accord.

Dolphins are often unpredictable and a set time can not be given for when they will arrive. This makes experiencing a visit very special as the Dolphins have decided to visit you, for however long they wish.

 A Popular Tourist Destination!

"Bay of Dolphins" is on display on big screen video. Watch this incredible film of the dolphins and learn more about where they eat, rest and play each day and season of the year. Some of this footage of the dolphins, has never been recorded elsewhere in the world.

Save the Loggerhead Turtles. This marine reptile is one of Western Australia's endangered species. During our winters juvenile turtles wash up on the beaches of the South West due to the unique forces of the Leeuwin Current (the movement of tropical warm water southward along the Western Australian coast). The Dolphin Discovery Centre has been funded by the Lotteries Commission to help save the Loggerhead's. We have established two aquaria to house and rehabilitate these unfortunate juvenile loggerheads before they are returned to the northern tropical waters.

The Interaction Zone allows dolphins to visit us on their own accord. Dolphins are often unpredictable and a set time can not be given for when they will arrive. This makes experiencing a visit very special as the dolphins have decided to visit you, for however long they wish.

People are not permitted to actively swim along side dolphins but you are able to wear mask and snorkel and float in the zone with the dolphins.

Since 1990, a known 34 different dolphins have visited the Zone. Dorsal fins were used to identify each dolphin and a name was given if dolphins became regular visitors.

Join us for an intimate swim with wild dolphins in their natural environment. The Dolphin Discovery Centre "Swim On The Wild Side" tours include entry to our informative interpretative centre called the "Discovery Room", instruction, equipment (mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit), and light refreshments. We do suggest you bring your own equipment if you have it.

The tour is professionally lead by our own marine biologists and is simply the most breathtaking experience. Of course, the dolphins of Koombana Bay are completely wild so the success of a tour cannot be guaranteed and conditions apply
