The former HMAS Swan was a
River Class Frigate Destroyer built in 1867 costing a staggering 22 million
dollars, making it the most expensive warship ever built in Australia. After
serving 26 years steaming around 800,000 nautical miles in Australian and Asian
waters, she was decommissioned in September 1996 and gifted to the Western
Australian Government.
On the 14th December 1997 the
Swan was scuttled 1.3 nautical miles off the south west coast in 30 metres of
water, inhabited by an abundance of marine life that now make the massive bulk
of the HMAS Swan their home.
The Swan is 113 metres in
length and 23 metres high. her dimensions, and the careful preparation of the
wreck with safety in mind, make the Swan a brilliant dive for all levels of
diver experience!
